INTRODUCING…

-Hi, my name is Amanda Lopez.  I am 13 years old and an eighth grader at Los Colinas Middle School.  I am in the horse project, Arts and Crafts project, and the pygmy goat project and this is my first year in 4-H. My favorite 4-H project is the horse project because there is always

a lot to do.

-Hello, my name is Laura Horton.  I am 10 years old and I am a student at Richard Bard Elementary.  This is my first year in 4-H and I am in the sheep herding, dog and photography project. I don't have a favorite project because I enjoy them all.  My favorite part about 4H

is going to all of the general meetings.

-Hi, my name is Justin Long.  I attend Moorpark High School and I am 15 years

old. This is my fifth year in 4-H and I am in the steer project and the heffer project.  My favorite project is the steer project because you get to keep your project steer longer.  My favorite part about 4-H is getting to meet so many new people.

A LITTLE 4-H HISTORY

In 1905, Jasper L. McBrein, Nebraska's superintendent of public instruction, appointed E.C. Bishop to expand the corn growing, sewing and baking projects he had started in the New York County schools. The program led to the organization of the Nebraska Boys' Agricultural Association and the Nebraska Girls' Domestic Science Association. Clearly, the organization of boys' and girls' clubs as a means of advancing rural youth education was an idea whose time had come. The stated purpose of the Nebraska associations included a phrase that had come to symbolize the idea of agricultural clubs. There statement of purpose read, in part, "to educate the youth of the county, town and city to a knowledge of their dependence upon nature's resources, and to the value of the fullest development of hand, head and heart…." Possibly taken from a poem by Rudyard Kipling, the phrase "hand, heart and head" became a popular way for educators and others to express a commitment to learning and the development of young citizens.
